Allentown Indoor Flat Track Races
Walking into Ag Hall at the Allentown Fairgrounds, you would never think that they could pull off a flat track race within the walls of this small exposition center.
However, The two day Lehigh Valley Motorcycle Expo promised to do just that. And for the second year in a row, Bill Rowe and his crew successfully brought AMA-sanctioned flat track racing to Allentown, Pennsylvania; providing a nice mid-winter reprieve for both racers and flat track fans.
Sharing the expo center with a swap meet and motorcycle show, the indoor track was small and tight, which meant the racing was close and the racers were regularly bumping elbows in the turns. While short track races aren't necessarily going to be very fast races, line up a handful of 250-450cc AMA Expert and Pro flat track racers at the starting line and you're going to get some seriously exciting racing. Other classes included everything from 50cc, 250-450cc Am, vintage, super vintage, and hooligan.
I would say that Bill and his crew are doing an excellent job organizing and pulling off events like the Indoor Flat Track Racing at the Lehigh Valley Motorcycle Expo and the Allentown Vintage Drags that they hold during the Summer and Fall. The indoor flat track racing at Ag Hall is another event that I hope continues to grow and gain a much larger audience. Exposing more people to flat track racing can only help the sport. And I'm sure that the number of 50cc and similarly small bike classes being run at these races are going to get a lot of kids and parents psyched on getting off of their backyard dirt-rut tracks and sharing a real track with other amateurs and pros alike. At the same time, it's great to see experienced racers riding in smaller events like this. I feel like it shows that they are racing for the love of racing and embracing any opportunity given for the chance to run some laps and support their sport.
