The 2020 Greasy Dozen Builder Collective
Over the weekend we put on the digital release of this years 2020 Greasy Dozen Builder Collective (Video below). For those of you who aren't familiar with the Greasy Dozen Builder Collective, we here at Old Bike Barn set out to create a event that was focused on giving back to the garage builder and the people who support our business. Each year we select 12 garage builders, plus a lucky 13 (bakers dozen) to receive support from our rad list of sponsors in the form of gift cards and parts. We look for builders who have a stalled project that has been put on hold while life got in the way. We're here to inspire and light that fire that was once burning during that build. Once selected the builders have a little over 5 months to finish their bikes. We host a large pre-party at Land Grant Brewing where the builder bikes are displayed for the public to see for the first time. The following day the builders fire up their bikes and we take a 4hr cruise through some of Ohio's best back roads, ending at the Clark Family Farm for a traditional grass roots motorcycle party and campout!
People always ask us "who won the Greasy Dozen this year?" the answer is, No one. This isn't a biker build off, we aren't here to pit people against each other, rather the complete opposite; all 13 of the builders selected are winners in our eyes. One of the first and probably most important things that happens when you are selected as a Greasy Dozen builder is the builder group chat. We add all the builders to a group chat where they can interact, get to know each other and share tips/tricks or offer advice to other builders. This may seem like a silly idea, but every year we watch this chat create great friendships and shed knowledge these builders will use for years to come.
On top of all the knowledge shared and gained from being a part of the collective, the builders receive gift cards from our long list of sponsors. As we stated earlier, this is all about giving back to the garage builders who support our business. Over the last 8yrs we have given away over $100,000 in prizes this way, and while its work to organize and put on this event, its a labor of love to give something back to the motorcycle community.
So, If you are wondering how to enter in the Greasy Dozen Builder Collective, here's the info you need to know.
- We focus on garage builders or small shops with 2 employees or less.
- We specifically look for stalled projects that need that final push of motivation along with some free goods to help complete it.
- For the Lucky 13, we look for a captivating story, first time builder, something that really grabs our attention. (watch this years digital release to hear the story on this years Lucky 13, it'll give you a good idea of what were looking for.)
- There are 3 Categories of builds: Chopper, Street Tracker, and Cafe Racer (make sure your build fits into one of those categories)
Thats it, its pretty simple and straight forward. We will be opening submissions up very soon, so pay attention to our facebook and instagram account for the announcement!
With that being said, due to Covid this year we we're unable to have the party, so we brought the party to you digitally! Each of the 2020 builders sent in videos of their builds and we compiled those into a hour long premier for the world to see. Check out the video and show some support for the rad group of guys that put blood, sweat and tears into these builds. They truly deserve it! Over the coming weeks we will be featuring each build on the blog with a little in depth interview to get to know the builder what it was like building for the Greasy Dozen. On top of the digital release and the blog features, we wanted to do something special for the builders. We reached out to Pipe Dream Illustrations and commissioned her to illustrate each of this years builds, which we've turned into t-shirts and prints. Purchasing a shirt or print is the best way to support the show, all the proceeds go directly back into the event and help make this possible! You can purchase a shirt or print here
